Weather changes trigger rise in viral infection spread

In light of recent weather fluctuations, medical officials are cautioning the public about the potential spread of a viral infection.

Senior Consultant Physician Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama said this can be attributed to the fluctuation in temperature and change in weather conditions.

Although not a seasonal flu, viral infections are common, but Dr. Wijewickrama warned that ignoring medical attention could lead to dangerous consequences.

“Therefore, it is essential for individuals to seek immediate medical attention if they experience persistent symptoms such as sore throat, cough, runny nose, fever accompanied by aches and pain,” he stressed.

Dr. Wijewickrama also urged people not to take antibiotics without the guidance of medical professionals.

Meanwhile, Dr. Deepal Perera, a consultant pediatrician at Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) told that the viral infection currently spreading is referred to as an “upper respiratory viral infection.”

Although there has been a slight increase in children seeking treatment for sore throat and fever, Dr. Perera emphasized that the viral infection is not spreading at an alarming rate.

Nonetheless, he noted that timely medical treatment is crucial in managing the situation effectively.
