Police have announced that the suspect implicated in the murder of a Buddhist monk at a temple in Malwathuhiripitiya has been fatally shot by law enforcement while attempting to escape custody. The arrest occurred on March 11, when officers apprehended the 32-year-old suspect, believed to be the gunman responsible for the monk’s murder on January 23.
The suspect was being escorted by police to recover alleged hidden weapons in the Yatawaka area in Attanagalla when he tried to escape, leading to the use of lethal force by the officers. The initial arrest had taken place in the Hambegama area in Moneragala.
Investigations into the monk’s murder have led to the arrest of seven individuals suspected of involvement in the crime. The incident, which took place in the early hours of January 23, involved a group of four assailants arriving in a car and fatally shooting the Buddhist monk inside the temple in the Malwathuhiripitiya area of Gampaha.
