Warning issued over thundershowers and lightning in parts of the island

The Department of Meteorology says that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several places in in Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western and Uva provinces and in Galle and Matara districts after 2.00 p.m. on Saturday (11).

In its latest weather forecast, the department stated that heavy showers of about 100mm are likely at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern and Uva provinces and in Polonnaruwa district.

Meanwhile, showers may occur at several places in Western and Southern provinces and in Puttalam, Mannar, Kilinochchi and Jaffna districts during the morning too.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers, according to the Met. Department.

Meanwhile, the Met. Department also issued an ‘Amber’ level advisory for severe lightning in several areas across the island today (10). 

Thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Eastern, Uva and North-central provinces and in Matale, Mullaitivu and Kurunegala districts, it added.

There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers, according to the department.

Thus, general public are kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.
