Secretary General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Golam Sarwar, visited Sri Lanka from 10-14 June 2024.
During the visit, Secretary General Sarwar paid courtesy calls on President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabry and Acting Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mohammed Jauhar.
Discussions focused on the ways to further enhance the SAARC process. The Secretary General apprised on the current activities of SAARC and its challenges and sought Sri Lanka’s support to elevate the process. Foreign Minister Sabry, while appreciating the progress made, emphasized that the Association requires to take further strides to strengthen regional cooperation.
During his visit, the Secretary General also participated in the Inaugural Session of the 45th SAARCFINANCE Governor’s meeting and undertook visits to the SAARC Cultural Centre and a SAARC Development Fund, co-funded project in Kandy.
The SAARC Secretary General also participated in a roundtable discussion at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute and appraised the current developments and the future direction of the SAARC Process.
