Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed the health sector officials to start the vaccinate all the students and people aged below 30 once completed the ongoing vaccination program of above 30 age. President gave these instructions at a meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat with the Special Committee on COVID-19 Control on the vaccination drive and future operations. Health officials said that the age category below 30 is comparatively less risky for COVID than the people over 60 years of age.
Data indicates that 75% of COVID related deaths occur in people over 60 years of age and only 1.26% of deaths were in people below 30 age.
According to COVID19 Vaccine rollout tracking, over 86% of the total population above age 30 in Sri Lanka have been administered with at least the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
So far, 100% of the people in this age category in Matale, 97% in Kandy, 94% in Hambantota and 93% in Gampaha Districts have been given the first dose of vaccine.
President Rajapaksa emphasized the need to inoculate a higher percentage of people in all parts of the country before September in a systematic manner following the receipt of vaccines that have been ordered.
