The United States Agency for International Development USAID is delivering on the promise by USAID Administrator Samantha Power to bring fertilizer to Sri Lanka. Mission Director Gabriel Grau was in Ja-Ela to hand over fertilizer and, more important, to learn first-hand about the challenges farmers face meeting Sri Lanka’s food security needs. They also discussed the future of Sri Lanka Agriculture and how to modernize the sector so it becomes more market-driven and less reliant on subsidies.
Farmers provided their own ideas from diversifying crops to sharing the cost of farm support with the government. The U.S. will remain a strong partner with farmers, the government, the market, and all stakeholders to develop agriculture in Sri Lanka.
