A previous announcement from the UGC stated that applications for university admissions can be submitted without the Principal’s Certificate and GCE Ordinary Level Certificates, due to the current travel restrictions imposed to arrest the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, when the travel restrictions are lifted and schools reopen, students have to certify the necessary certificates and submit them to the UGC.
Much awaited UGC University Admission Handbook for the 2020/2021 Academic year will be released May 21 according to University Grants Commission Chairman. As usual students have to apply for universities via online and send the application form via REGISTERED POST. Campus Handbook has printed in three languages (Sinhala Tamil and English) and to be release May 21 to all major bookshops islandwide. Students can purchase the book via Universities also. Once release the book students can download the hand book via UGC official www.ugc.ac.lk website. Last year university admission process delayed due to Coronavirus pandemic.
According to the UGC sources students can only apply through the Internet this time (Apply via Online). UGC handbook will be cost about Rs. 500 & will be available UGC Approved bookshops islandwide. Students can apply for universities via Online and can use “Nenasala IT Centeres” for online registration free of charge.
UGC Strongly advice students to use Online Method for applying Universities. Online method is simple, speedy, secure & accurate. Please Read all details carefully before you fill the online & manual forms.
Sri Lanka University Grants Commission UGC sources say cut-off marks for entrance to university for the new academic year will release 2021 July. UGC has not yet announced the exact date.
Meanwhile Government planning to prepare a mechanism to admit students to universities within 6 months period after A/L exam results release. Currently it takes about one year to admit students to local universities. Academic activities of Medical & Engineering faculties will start before 2021 November end. According to the reliable sources other faculties (Management, Science, Arts) will start from 2021 December to February 2022 period.

The candidates who wish to apply for university admission for the academic year 2020/ 2021 based on the results of the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) Examination held in 2020 should affix their signature on the printed application obtained after submitting application online (both “Order of Course & University Preference” page under no. 05 and “Applicant’s Declaration” page under no. 06 on the printed application) and it is a mandatory requirement to send a scanned copy or a clear image (photograph) of the signed application to the email ID apply2020@ugc.ac.lk.
Further, the candidates who will not be able to complete the other requirements mentioned in the University Admission Handbook before sending the signed application to the UGC due to the Covid 19 pandemic situation of the country, should follow the procedure stated below.
For School Candidates
If the candidate is a school candidate, it is mandatory to submit the printed application after affixing his/ her signature as stated above to the UGC by registered post as soon as the currently imposed relevant travel restrictions are removed.
For Private Candidates
If the candidate is a private candidate and already has the School Leaving Certificate and the Grama Niladhari Certificate (DS4 Certificate) to prove the residence with him/ her, the scanned copies or clear images (photographs) of those documents should be emailed to the above email together with the scanned copy or clear image (photograph) of the signed application.
If those documents are already not with the candidates, it is sufficient to send only the scanned copy or the clear image (photograph) of the signed application to the above email.
In addition to the above, it is a mandatory to submit the printed application after affixing applicant’s signature as stated above together with the originals of the School Leaving Certificate and the Grama Niladhari Certificate (DS4 Certificate) to prove the residence to the UGC by registered post as soon as the currently imposed relevant travel restrictions are removed.
If a candidate has selected to a course of study in an University, yet failed to submit his/her application to the UGC by registered post as stated above will not be informed on the selection until he/she satisfied the same.
NOTICE TO STUDENTS APPLYING FOR UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2020/2021 BASED ON THE RESULTS OF THE GCE ( ADVANCED LEVEL ) EXAMINATION HELD IN 2020.
The above-mentioned students are advised to purchase the University Admission Handbook applicable to the academic year 2020/2021 or download the same only from the University Grants Commission (UGC) website, that is: www.ugc.ac.lk before submitting applications for university admission to the UGC.
Please note that the UGC holds the sole right of publishing the said Handbook and that it has not authorized any other third party to share or publish the said Handbook in any website or other social media.
However, the UGC has observed that the above Handbook has been uploaded to different websites or through other social media.
In view of the above, please further note that the UGC will not hold itself responsible nor be held liable for any inaccurate or misleading information, if any, in the contents of the Handbook made available on such websites / social media or any other electronic media .
