U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Chief Admiral Samuel Paparo Visits Sri Lanka
Colombo, Sri Lanka – March 19, 2025 (LankaXpress) : Admiral Samuel J. Paparo, Commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM), arrived in Sri Lanka today for a three-day visit from March 19 to 21. His visit underscores the growing security cooperation between the United States and Sri Lanka, focusing on regional stability and mutual strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific.
During his stay, Admiral Paparo will engage in high-level discussions with senior Sri Lankan government officials and military leaders. These talks aim to strengthen bilateral defense ties and explore opportunities for enhanced security collaboration. His visit highlights the United States’ commitment to supporting Sri Lanka in addressing regional security challenges and fostering a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Admiral Paparo, a highly decorated naval officer, assumed command of INDOPACOM in May 2024. With an extensive career in naval aviation, he has accumulated over 6,000 flight hours in advanced fighter jets, including the F-14, F-15, and F/A-18. He is also a graduate of the U.S. Navy’s elite TOPGUN program.
His operational experience includes commanding Carrier Strike Groups and serving in Afghanistan as part of a Provincial Reconstruction Team. Additionally, he has held key leadership roles in U.S. Central Command and U.S. Pacific Fleet, overseeing military operations across multiple regions.
As the head of INDOPACOM, Admiral Paparo leads the United States’ largest combatant command, responsible for military operations across the Indo-Pacific region, which encompasses 36 nations and 60% of the world’s population.
The visit reaffirms the strong partnership between the United States and Sri Lanka in ensuring maritime security, countering emerging threats, and enhancing defense cooperation in the region. Further discussions on strategic security initiatives are expected during his engagements in Colombo.
