Transport of Pigs Halted Nationwide Amid African Swine Fever Detection

The Department of Animal Production and Health has announced a nationwide suspension of pig transport between all divisional secretariats due to the detection of African Swine Fever (ASF) in several markets. This decision aims to prevent further spread of the virus, which poses a significant threat to the island’s pig population.

Initially, the disease was thought to be “Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome” (PRRS); however, subsequent field tests revealed positive samples for ASF. The department is implementing stringent measures to control the outbreak and safeguard the health of livestock across Sri Lanka.

Authorities are urging pig farmers and traders to remain vigilant and report any signs of illness in their animals. The situation will be monitored closely as officials work to contain the disease and protect the country’s agricultural sector.
