Train collides with stalled vehicle, disrupting services on Kelani Valley line

A train has collided with a vehicle that had stalled at the railway crossing between Liyanwala and Watareka, disrupting services on the Kelani Valley railway line, according to Sri Lanka Railways.

The Meegoda Police reported that the vehicle collided with the train while attempting to cross the tracks.

Investigations revealed that the railway crossing gate operator was absent at the time of the incident, resulting in the gate being left open.

The driver of the vehicle was subsequently transported to Padukka Divisional Hospital.

Although he sustained minor injuries, his condition is not considered serious, as confirmed by the police.

A spokesperson from Padukka Railway Station stated that the train involved in the accident was the final train operating on the Kelani Valley Line in the morning.

Following the collision, the train’s engine failed to restart, leading to the suspension of its services, he said.
