Excise Officer Arrested for Posting Distorted Version of New Year Song on Social Media
A 31-year-old Excise officer from Wariyapola has been apprehended by authorities for sharing a modified rendition of the popular “Soorya Mangalya New Year” song by Rohana Beddage on social media. The suspect’s actions sparked outrage among the officials and drew the attention of governmental authorities, prompting swift action by law enforcement.
The suspect, whose identity has been withheld pending further investigation, allegedly altered the lyrics of the traditional New Year song, distorting its original meaning. The modified version of the song was shared widely across various social media platforms including “Okapathana Vidyalaya” Facebook page.
In response to the incident, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs has initiated an investigation into the matter, aiming to determine the extent of the distortion and the potential impact on cultural sensitivities. Minister of Education Vidura Wickramanayake highlighted the seriousness of the issue, emphasizing the need to preserve the integrity of cultural traditions in the digital age.
The suspect is currently in police custody, where further inquiries are being conducted into the motive behind the dissemination of the distorted song. Charges are expected to be filed against the individual under relevant statutes governing online behavior and public decency.
