Sun Directly Overhead in Several Areas of Sri Lanka; Authorities Urge Public to Take Precautions Against Heat

The sun will be directly overhead across parts of Sri Lanka between April 5th and 14th due to its apparent northward relative motion, meteorologists confirmed. Today (April 5), the nearest areas experiencing this phenomenon include Kahawa, Meetiyagoda, Elamaldeniya, Ambakolawewa, and Bundala around 12:13 PM.

As a result, temperatures are expected to exceed 32°C in most parts of the country. The heat index—or the temperature felt on the human body—will likely rise significantly in certain areas, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Health authorities are advising the public to remain cautious, particularly during midday hours when heat is most intense. Workers at job sites are urged to stay hydrated and take regular breaks in shaded areas. Citizens are also encouraged to check on vulnerable groups such as the elderly and sick to ensure they remain cool and well-hydrated.

Precautionary guidelines include:

  • Vehicles: Never leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles.
  • Outdoors: Limit strenuous activities, seek shade when possible, and drink plenty of fluids.
  • Indoors: Use fans or cooling systems and maintain good air circulation.
  • Clothing: Opt for lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing to help stay cool.
