Colombo, Sri Lanka (LankaXpress) – Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshbandu Tennakoon has emphasized the commitment of the Sri Lanka Police to create a peaceful society through the Anti-Drug Operation “Yukthiya”. Speaking on the progress and objectives of the operation, IGP Tennakoon made it clear that the initiative is not a media show but a serious effort to eradicate crime and drug addiction from the country.
The “Yukthiya” operation, which has been ongoing for six months, has resulted in the arrest of 152,470 suspects and the rehabilitation of 3,765 youths severely addicted to drugs. These rehabilitated individuals are now reintegrating into society as productive citizens.
Despite criticisms from some local and international quarters, the operation has led to a significant reduction in crime rates. IGP Tennakoon highlighted that compared to 2023, crimes in Sri Lanka have decreased by 24% in 2024. The operation’s focus remains on saving young lives from the grip of drug addiction and ensuring a safe environment for all Sri Lankans.
“We are not seeking praise through media displays,” said IGP Tennakoon. “Our aim is to create a society where people can live without the fear of crime and drugs. The ‘Yukthiya’ operation will continue its efforts to achieve minimal crime and a drug-free society in Sri Lanka.”
The Sri Lanka Police are determined to maintain and further this progress, working tirelessly to secure the safety and well-being of the nation’s citizens.
