A suspect has been detained by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Colombo for alleged connections with ISIS operatives recently apprehended in India. The arrest follows the capture of four ISIS terrorists in Ahmedabad by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad on May 20, after the city’s airport received a bomb threat.
Gujarat’s Director General of Police, Vikash Sahay, stated that the four suspects, identified as Sri Lankan nationals, were arrested upon arriving in Ahmedabad from Chennai on an IndiGo flight. The arrests were made possible by corroborating the suspects’ identities with officials in Colombo.
In response, Sri Lankan intelligence agencies have initiated a renewed investigation into ISIS activities within the country. Sri Lanka’s State Intelligence has sought additional information from Indian authorities to further investigate the suspects’ backgrounds and connections to ISIS.
Sri Lanka’s Public Security Minister, Tiran Alles, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that security agencies are closely monitoring developments and collaborating with Indian counterparts to mitigate any potential threats.
