Sri Lanka extreme weather – 3 deaths, over 55,000 people affected island-wide

At least 3 persons have died, 2 injured and over 55,000 people have been affected due to the adverse weather conditions including floods and landslides prevailing in several parts of Sri Lanka during the last few days. According to DMC report, 5 house is fully damaged, and 178 houses are partially damaged due to bad weather. About 1146 people displaced. 11 districts were affected.

Massive rainfall of 187mm was reported in Elston (Rathnapura) area last 24-hour period.

The current heavy rains are expected to continue, due to the influence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ – The region where winds from the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere converge) around the island.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts. Heavy showers above 100 mm can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Centralprovinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere over the Island during the afternoon or night. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm can be expected at some places.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
