Sri Lanka Responds to UK Sanctions on Former Military Commanders
The Sri Lankan government has taken note of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office’s (FCDO) press release dated March 24, 2025, announcing sanctions on four individuals, including three former military commanders, for alleged human rights violations during the Sri Lankan civil war.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment & Tourism emphasized that these sanctions—comprising asset freezes and travel bans—are a unilateral action by the UK government. The ministry stated that such measures do not aid Sri Lanka’s national reconciliation process but instead complicate ongoing efforts.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening domestic accountability and reconciliation mechanisms to address any past human rights concerns. It also noted the reference in the UK’s statement to a campaign pledge to ensure accountability, suggesting that these sanctions align with UK political commitments.
Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath conveyed Sri Lanka’s official position to British High Commissioner Andrew Patrick during a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
