Colombo, Sri Lanka (LankaXpress) – President Ranil Wickremesinghe has expressed his shock and relief following the assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was injured in the incident but is reported to be safe.
In a statement, President Wickremesinghe highlighted the pain of political violence that Sri Lankans have endured and stressed the importance of upholding democratic laws to prevent such acts.
“I am shocked by the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump and relieved he is safe,” Wickremesinghe said. “Wishing him a swift recovery. Sri Lankans know the pain of political violence all too well. We must all uphold the laws that protect democracy.”
The attempt on Trump’s life occurred at a rally, where a gunman opened fire, resulting in the death of the attacker and at least one audience member, with two other attendees critically injured. The Secret Service confirmed the shooter’s death and assured the public that Trump is safe.
US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung expressed her horror at the shooting during former President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. In a tweet, she conveyed gratitude for Trump’s safety, praised the Secret Service and law enforcement, and prayed for the recovery of those affected. Chung echoed President Biden’s stance, condemning political violence and reaffirming its incompatibility with democracy.
