Sri Lanka Launches “Praja Shakthi” Programme to Combat Poverty with Multi-Dimensional Approach

Sri Lanka is taking a significant step towards addressing the persistent issue of poverty with the launch of the “Praja Shakthi” programme, aimed at eradicating poverty through a consolidated, multi-approach strategy. The programme, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, is designed to provide a comprehensive solution to the socio-economic challenges faced by vulnerable communities, particularly in rural and estate areas.

At present, one out of every six individuals in Sri Lanka lives in multi-dimensional poverty, with 95.3% of the affected population residing in rural and estate-related environments. Despite the government’s efforts in implementing numerous poverty alleviation programmes over the years, public opinion has highlighted dissatisfaction with the outcomes of these initiatives. The numbers speak for themselves: the number of beneficiaries of poverty alleviation programmes has steadily increased from 1.1 million in 2000 to 1.57 million in 2010, and further to 1.79 million by 2024. However, the results have not met expectations, underscoring the need for a more effective and holistic approach.

The new “Praja Shakthi” programme aims to create a formal social security network for vulnerable communities, while also involving other citizens as active participants in the nation’s economic development. This initiative aligns with the vision of the new government to achieve “Pohosath Ratak – Surakshitha Jeewithayak” (A wealthy country – secure life), as outlined in the policy declaration.

By taking a multi-dimensional approach, the government aims to integrate poverty eradication with broader socio-economic reforms, ensuring sustainable development and improved living standards for all citizens, especially in the most disadvantaged areas.

This bold move signals a renewed commitment to ending poverty and building a more prosperous and secure future for Sri Lanka. ( LankaXpress.com)
