Fairly heavy showers above 50mm may occur at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Strong winds about 50 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the Central hills.

Several spells of showers may occur in the Northern and North-central provinces. Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in Uva and Eastern province during the evening or night.

A low-pressure area is expected to form over the North of May of Bengal late this week and to move towards India.

Irrigation Department issued Flood Warning Message for Maha Oya Basin – RED.

Major flood situation reports at Maha Oya river in Giriulla. Minor flood situation reports at Kelani Ganga river at Glencourse, Maha Oya river Badalgama, Attanagalu Oya river at Dunamale and Kalu ganga river at Millakanda areas.

There is a high possibility of occurring a Major Flood Situation in lowline areas of Maha Oya Valley situated in Alawwa, Diwulapitiya, Meerigama, Pannala, Wennappuwa, Negambo, Katana, Narammala and Dankotuwa D/S Divisions. The residents of the area and drivers of the vehicles running through those areas are requested to pay high attention in this regards in order to save valuable lives and public and private properties.

There is a considerable probability of occurring a Minor Flood Situation at lowline areas of Kelani River Flood plain situated in Dehiowita, Ruwanwella, Seethawaka, Deraniyagala, Dompe, Awissawella, Hanwella, Kaduwela, Biyagama, Kolonnawa, Colombo and Wattala DS Division areas.

Sea Area:

Wind speed may increase up to (60-70) kmph at times in the sea area off the coast extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanturai and Hambantota to Pottuvil. There is a possibility to increase swell waves (about 2.0 – 2.5 m) in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. The naval and fishing communities are requested to be vigilant in this regard.

Landslide early warning Level 03 issued for Udunuwara, Rambukkana, Kegalle, Ruwanwella, Yatiyanthota, Bulathkohupitiya and Mawanella , Mallawapitiya, Ambagamuwa , Kuruwita and Kalawana areas.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

On the apparent southward relative motion of the sun, it is going to be directly over the latitudes of Sri Lanka during 28th of August to 07th of September in this year. The nearest towns of Sri Lanka over which the sun is overhead today (06) are Bentotta (Kaluthara district), Pothupitiya (Rathnapura district), Bodagama (Monaragala district) about 12.09 noon.
