SLPP Faction Supporting President Wickremesinghe to Form New Party

MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage announced that the faction of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporting President Ranil Wickremesinghe will establish a new political party next week. This move is strategically aimed at the upcoming general election scheduled for 2025.

The announcement was made during the Former Local Government Heads Forum. According to Aluthgamage, the new party will consolidate support for President Wickremesinghe, who is running as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential election. The SLPP faction backing Wickremesinghe has reportedly made all necessary arrangements for the new party’s formation.

Approximately 90 parliamentarians are currently backing Wickremesinghe in the presidential race.
