Eight people lost their lives in road accidents across Sri Lanka in the past 24 hours. Six motorcycle riders and two pedestrians were among the victims.
Fatalities include a 30-year-old rider in Nawakuruduwatta, a 52-year-old female rider in Mannar, and a 33-year-old rider in Ipalogama. Other incidents involved a 44-year-old rider in Wakare, a 30-year-old in Mannar-Vavuniya, and a 38-year-old in Payagala. Additionally, a 66-year-old pedestrian was struck by a lorry in Sandiweli, and a 58-year-old pedestrian was hit by a lorry in Warakapola. Authorities urge road safety.
The police spokesman said it is possible to save those lives and requested the motorists to drive in strict accordance with the rules of the road and to drive carefully and attentively on the road.
According to Sri Lanka Police statistics about seven to eight people die each day due to accidents. The total number of vehicles registered in the country recorded as 8.3 million and out that 60% listed as Motorcycles. In 2017 Sri Lanka’s motor vehicle population was 7.2 million. So far this year over 1300 persons died due to road traffic accidents.
