Road, domestic accidents major health issue in SL: Health Minister

Road and domestic accidents have become a major health issue in Sri Lanka as one million out of a total of 6 million hospital admissions are due to accidents, Health Minister Ramesh Pathirana told in Parliament.

“Around 30 people die daily due to accidents and 12,000 annually due to road and domestic accidents in Sri Lanka,” the Minister revealed.

“Non-communicable diseases is another major health challenge which the country is slated to face in the future,” he added.

The Minister revealed that 30 percent of those who are more than 35 years old are suffering from high blood pressure, while 15 percent of the same age group is suffering from diabetes. Diabetes among children is also on the increase while 10 percent of Sri Lankan children are suffering from obesity,” the Minister further revealed.

“No one hardly talks about these issues but these are the major health challenges which are faced by Sri Lanka,” the Minister stressed.
