The Inter University Students’ Federation IUSF has decided to launch a protest in Colombo on January 16 demanding the release of their student leader Wasanttha Mudalige.
Inter-University Student Federation (IUSF) have been engaged in a continuous struggle against the government’s repression of the rights of the people. IUSF have organised a protest on January 16th, 2023, to mark 150 days since the unlawful detention of our Convenor, Wasantha Mudalige, under the PTA. The protest is scheduled to begin in Colombo, to demand solutions to the economic issues faced by the people, against State repression and calling for the release of Wasantha Mudalige.
IUSF believes that the government’s repression is bound to take place during the protest, hence they requests representatives of the international community who value human rights and democracy, to observe and monitor the protest.
Students launched a new wave of protests calling for the release of student activists detained by police in Colombo on 18 August under the country’s draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), which allows up to a year’s detention without trial.
