In a remarkable resurgence, Sri Lanka has witnessed an extraordinary influx of tourists, setting a new record with 218,350 arrivals in February 2024 – the highest monthly figure since January 2020. This follows an impressive January, which recorded 208,253 arrivals, marking the second consecutive month with over 200,000 visitors. Harin Fernando, the Minister of Tourism, shared this exciting news on X (formerly Twitter).
The tourism sector’s economic impact has been substantial, with estimated earnings reaching USD 710 million for the first two months of 2024. January alone contributed significantly, with the country raking in USD 342 million – the highest monthly value since January 2020, according to the latest report from the Central Bank on external sector performance.
This surge in tourism is a testament to Sri Lanka’s resilience and attractiveness as a destination. In January 2023, the country welcomed 102,545 tourists, highlighting a remarkable year-on-year growth in visitor numbers. The tourism industry’s success bodes well for the country’s economic recovery and underscores Sri Lanka’s enduring appeal as a global travel hotspot.
