President Ranil Wickremesinghe is mulling to appoint new governors to the nine provinces in place of the present ones appointed by his predecessor Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
A governor is a post appointed by the president to exercise executive powers over the provincial councils. Any statute passed by a provincial council comes into force only after assent by the governor concerned.
In the absence of elected members of the provincial councils these days, the governors exercise total authority on their affairs.
The President is planning to pick those with political experience to be appointed governors early next year. Daily Mirror learns that former Minister John Amaratunga has been promised a governor post.
