President Ranil Wickremesinghe has reaffirmed his belief that the President’s term is five years and supports the Election Commission’s decision to hold the Presidential Election in 2024. This clarification comes amid speculation and social media posts suggesting an attempt to delay the election.
President Wickremesinghe says the controversy following a businessman’s Fundamental Rights petition filed with the Supreme Court. The petition seeks to prevent the calling of a Presidential election until the Court delivers its interpretation of the President’s term and the election date.
President Wickremesinghe stated that Chamindra Dayan Lenawa, who filed a determination application regarding the President’s term, did not consult him or his lawyers before approaching the Supreme Court.
