Pre-Flood Warning Issued for Several River Basins due to current weather situation

Irrigation Department issued pre-flood warning for several river basins. There is a high probability of occurring flood situations in lowline flood prone areas of several rivers.

Considering; the current weather situation prevailing in Sri Lanka, weather forecasts for next few days (2021.11.08, 2021.11.09 & 2021.11.10) by Meteorological Department and current water storage situation prevailing in major reservoirs, there is a considerable probability of occurring flood situations in lowline flood prone area in following river basins.

Therefore residents living in those areas are kindly requested to be vigilant in this regards.

  3. Attanagalu Oya Basin
  4. Kelani Ganga Basin
  5. Kalu Ganga Basin
  6. Benthara Ganga Basin
  7. Gin Ganga Basin
  8. Nilwala Ganga Basin
  9. Kala Oya Basin

A low pressure area is likely to form over south east Bay of Bengal. There are chances of intensification of the possible system and movement towards India’s north Tamil Nadu coast. The forecasted system is likely to intensify into a depression or Cyclone over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Sri Lanka around November 11.

Enhancement of the rainy weather condition in the land areas and windy condition in the sea areas around Sri Lanka can be expected during November 07th, 08th and 09th November, due to influence of the prevailing wind convergence zone in the vicinity of the island.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North- western and Northern provinces and in Galle and Matara districts. Very heavy showers above 150 mm can be expected at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy and Nuwara- Eliya district.

Heavy showers about 100 mm can be expected at some places in North-western and Northern provinces and in Matale, Galle and Matara districts during next 24 hours. (LankaXpress.com)
