Penalty up to Rs. 50,000 for failing to obtain TIN

The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) says any person who fails to obtain a Tax Identification Number (TIN) faces a penalty of Rs. 50,000.

It is now mandatory for any individual aged 18 years or above or who attains the age of 18 years on or after January 01, 2024, to register with the IRD and obtain a TIN.

Additionally, any person who receives an annual income of over Rs.1.2 million is obliged to pay income tax.

The Ministry of Finance on Tuesday (Jan.02) clarified that having a TIN does not automatically imply liability for income tax.

Further, a TIN is made mandatory for specific activities including opening a current account, seeking building plan approval, registering a motor vehicle, renewing a license, and registering title deeds to land.
