In an islandwide special operation spanning the past 7 days, ‘Yukthiya,’ the Ministry of Public Security reports the arrest of 13,666 individuals. Law enforcement efforts also resulted in the seizure of significant quantities of illicit substances, including 9.8 kgs of Heroin, 4.6 kgs of ICE, 272 kgs of Cannabis, and 65,924 pills.
In the most recent 24-hour period, the operation continued its momentum, with 1,534 persons apprehended. The authorities confiscated 607g of Heroin, 381g of ICE, 3 kgs of Cannabis, and 1,042 pills during this phase.
The crackdown extended beyond individuals to their ill-gotten gains, as the Illegal Assets Investigation Division of the Police reveals the seizure of more than Rs.293 million worth of properties and vehicles throughout Operation ‘Yukthiya.’ This includes assets confiscated in the latest development on December 22, where Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon disclosed the confiscation of around Rs.134 million worth of assets. Notable among them are a multi-day trawler, a van, an SUV, a 3-storey building in Hikkaduwa, and two villas, a 4-storey near the Mahamodara bridge and a 3-storey villa also near the Mahamodara bridge.
These substantial gains underscore the effectiveness of ‘Yukthiya’ in dismantling criminal networks and curbing illegal activities, providing a significant boost to public safety and security.
