Sri Lanka’s national anthem singing in Tamil language – 75th Independence Day

The national anthem of Sri Lanka “Sri Lanka Matha / Sri Lanka Thaaye” will be sung in both Sinhala and Tamil languages during 75th Independence Day Ceremony on February 4, 2023. The National anthem will sing in Tamil at the end of the Independence Day proceedings.

The national anthem’s Tamil version “Sri Lanka Thaaye” sung at Independence Day celebration since 2016 to 2019 during Yahapalanaya government but was dropped by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa during 2020 to 2022.

At the first independence day ceremony held on 4 February 1949 at the Independence Memorial Hall in Torrington Square both “Namo Namo Matha” and “Sri Lanka Matha Pala Yasa Mahima” were sung, in Sinhala and Tamil, as “national songs”.

During the ‘Struggle – Aragalaya”, national anthem has been sung in the Tamil language at Galle Face Green Protest site.
