Memorandum of Understanding Signed Between Ministry of Education and Microsoft to Integrate Artificial Intelligence into School Education
In a significant move toward enhancing educational opportunities, the Ministry of Education has inked a memorandum of understanding with Microsoft to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into school curricula. The signing ceremony, held at the President’s Office, marked a pivotal moment in advancing technological education in Sri Lanka.
The agreement outlines plans to implement a pilot project introducing AI studies alongside Information Technology for students above grade 8. Twenty schools across 20 districts have been selected for the initial phase, with the provision of specialized classrooms and technical equipment.
Microsoft has pledged comprehensive support, including online educational resources and technical assistance from a dedicated team. During discussions with President Ranil Wickramasinghe, Microsoft representatives reiterated their commitment to fostering AI education within Sri Lanka.
Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft’s India and South Asia region, expressed gratitude for President Wickramasinghe’s leadership in embracing AI technology. Education Minister Susil Premjayant highlighted the program’s anticipated full implementation by 2025.
Attending the event, Ms. Julie Chang, the Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United States, underscored the significance of this initiative for the nation, urging all stakeholders to maximize its potential. Additionally, she announced forthcoming support from volunteer groups to enhance English language skills among Sri Lankan citizens, including schoolchildren.
