The iconic “Mihira” newspaper, Sri Lanka’s oldest children’s publication, has released its final printed edition. The newspaper, published by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL or Lake House), will now be available exclusively as an e-paper, accessible through https://www.mihira.lk/.
Founded on July 27, 1964, by veteran journalist Srilal Hikkaduwa Liyanage, Mihira has been a staple in the lives of Sri Lankan children for 60 years. The decision to cease its print version stems from the ongoing challenges faced by the media industry in Sri Lanka, including financial difficulties and a steady decline in print circulation. In recent years, several newspapers in the country have either ceased their printed editions or shut down entirely.
For many Sri Lankans who grew up in the 1960s and 1970s, Mihira holds a special place in their hearts, evoking nostalgic memories of a time with limited access to reading material. The transition marks the end of an era, as the printed version of Mihira has been a cherished part of childhood for multiple generations. Many media professionals and journalists in Sri Lanka attribute their foundational skills and early love for journalism to Mihira, maintaining their old copies with great fondness.
As Mihira completes 60 years of publication, it will continue its legacy in the digital age, preserving its rich history and continuing to inspire young readers through its e-paper format.
