Lord John Hannett Appointed as UK’s Trade Envoy to Sri Lanka
Lord John Hannett of Everton OBE has been appointed as the United Kingdom’s new Trade Envoy for Sri Lanka. In this role, he will support trade and investment efforts, working with senior stakeholders in both countries to enhance market access and create business opportunities that drive mutual economic growth.
Welcoming the appointment, UK High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Andrew Patrick, expressed confidence in Lord Hannett’s ability to strengthen trade ties across key sectors, including education, financial and professional services, renewable energy, and IT-enabled services. He highlighted the potential for this collaboration to boost economic prosperity for both nations and looked forward to Lord Hannett’s visit to Sri Lanka.
Lord Hannett, a British trade unionist and Labour life peer, emphasized his commitment to promoting trade relations between the UK and Sri Lanka. He stated that his focus would be on helping UK businesses capitalize on opportunities in Sri Lanka, fostering long-term economic benefits for both countries.
Recognized for his contributions to the economy, Lord Hannett was awarded an OBE in 2020 and was made a life peer in 2024. In the House of Lords, he continues to advocate for workers’ rights, economic fairness, and labor policy.
Trade Envoys play a key role in advancing the UK Government’s trade agenda by promoting British businesses, supporting investment opportunities, and addressing market access challenges. They work alongside Ambassadors, High Commissioners, and His Majesty’s Trade Commissioners to strengthen trade partnerships and facilitate business engagement in international markets.
