Japan Embassy and UNFPA Sri Lanka Join Forces to Deliver Health on Wheels for Maternal Care
In a significant collaboration, the Japan Embassy in Sri Lanka has made a generous contribution to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Sri Lanka. The initiative, aptly named “Health on Wheels,” involves the provision of mobile clinics and essential medicines to the Ministry of Health in Sri Lanka.
These mobile clinics, funded by Japan Embassy, are poised to play a pivotal role in extending critical maternal and reproductive health care, offering solace to women and girls across the nation amid the ongoing socioeconomic crisis.
The formal handover of this impactful donation to Health Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana was spearheaded by Mr. Pio Smith, Director of the Asia Pacific Region at the UNFPA, and Mr. Katsuti Kotaro, Acting Ambassador of the Japanese Embassy.
The “Health On Wheels” initiative features specially designed mobile units, equipped with a fully solar-powered medical clinic valued at over US$ 500,000. Outfitted with emergency gynecological facilities, including a specialized bed and comprehensive medical devices, these mobile units are strategically positioned to deliver crucial health services, particularly in emergency situations. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to improving maternal and reproductive health in Sri Lanka.
