Moments before the shooting
Reliable sources said powerful drug trafficker, Kanjipani Imran was behind the shooting incident in Athurugiriya yesterday, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals including Surendra Wasantha Perera alias ‘Club Wasantha’.
Almost every bullet fired was marked with letters ‘KPI’, Police sources said.
Kanjipani used to do drug trafficking identifying himself as ‘KPI’.
The assailants
The intelligence agencies said that the drugs ordered by him from Pakistani smugglers are marked ‘KPI’.
Police information stated that so far in history in a shooting arranged by underworld criminals there is not a single incident where bullets have been marked in this manner.
Two men with T-56 weapons had carried out the shooting and the investigation officers found that the bullet casings clearly had ‘KPI’ written on them with a marker pen.
The colour of these ammunition are different from normal ammunition, Police stated, saying that they are going to submit it to the Government Analyst to know if any liquid has been coated on them. Police suspect a gold liquid has been coated on them.
Police suspect shooters may have used some liquid on the bullets as Wasantha was known to wear a suraya (an amulet) to protect him from any shootings.
Meanwhile the car used in the Athurugiriya shooting incident, was found in the Koratota area in Kaduwela by the Police.

The shooting had occurred during the opening ceremony of a tattoo and piercing studio. Six persons including popular songstress K. Sujeewa were rushed to hospital following the shooting.
