In a tragic turn of events, a crew of six fishermen from Tangalle Fisheries Harbour fell critically ill after consuming a liquid from a bottle they found floating at sea during a multi-day fishing voyage. Despite efforts to save them, four fishermen have lost their lives.
The two surviving fishermen, who are in critical condition, were taken aboard a Singaporean merchant vessel where they received emergency treatment. The vessel is set to transfer the critically ill fishermen to SLNS Vijayabahu, which is currently en route to the designated sea area, approximately 365 nautical miles away.
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources swiftly sought assistance from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) Colombo at Navy Headquarters. In response, MRCC Colombo coordinated with nearby ships to provide immediate relief.
Additionally, a Navy doctor provided remote medical advice to the surviving fishermen through communication equipment. SLNS Vijayabahu, equipped with a medical team, is on its way to the location to provide further medical assistance and ensure the fishermen’s safe return to shore.
