Flood Warning issued for several lowline areas

Update – Irrigation Department says water levels of Kelani, Attanagalu Oya, Maya Oya, Kalu and Nilawala rivers are slowly rising and reaching minor flood situation. Major flood situation reports in Gurugoda Oya Holombuwa area. Minor flood situation reports in Thalagahagoda, Kitulgala, Baddegama, Dunamale, Badalagama and Millakanda areas.

Considering the rainfall situation of the catchment and current river water level reported at upstream river Gauging Stations such as Kithulgala, Holombuwa and Deraniyagala, there is a considerable probability of occurring a Minor Flood Situation at lowline areas of Kelani River Flood plain situated in Dehiowita, Ruwanwella, Seethawaka, Dompe, Kaduwela,Biyagama, Kolonnawa, Colombo and Wattala DS Division areas. The public living in those lowline areas and the drivers running through those areas are requested to be in highly vigilant in these regards. Disaster Management Authorities are kindly requested to take adequate precautions in these regards.

Owing to the rainfall situation occurred in Maha Oya River Basin within last 24 hours, the river water levels at the upstream areas have been risen considerably. Therefore, there is a considerable probability of occurring a Minor Flood in lowline areas in the river basin specially in Varandagolla, Nalla, Diwuldeniya and Welihidha villages in Giriulla DS division areas within next few hours. There is a threat of inundating Negombo Kurunegala road closed to Giriulla town.. In addition, there is a possibility of occurring a Minor Flood situation in lowline areas of the Maha Oya River Basin situated in Alawwa, Meerigama, Pannala, Wennappuwa, Negambo, Katana and Dankotuwa DS divisions.

Irrigation Department says that rising water levels observed and Minor Flood level reports at Millakanda in Kuda Ganga sub basing in Kalu Basin. There is a possibility of occurring a minor flood situation in lowline areas of Kalu River Basin in Bulathsinhala, Baduraliya, Parinda Nuwara, Millaniya, Horana, Dodangoda and Kalutara DS division areas within next few hours. Therefore, public living in those areas and drivers running through roads in those lowline areas are requested to be highly vigilant in this regards.

It is observed that a considerable rainfall has been occurred in Attanagalu Oya Basin during last 24 hours. In addition, water level of the river at upstream has risen to a considerable level. The water level at Dunamale River Gauging Station situated closed to Thihariya has risen upto 4.95 m at 10:30 AM today.

Owing to this situation, there is a possibility of occurring a minor flood situation in lowline areas of Attanagalu oya River Basin in Attanagalla, Gampaha and J-Ela DS division areas within next few hours. Therefore public living in those areas and drivers running through roads in those lowline areas are requested to be highly vigilant in this regards. Disaster Management Authorities are requested to take suitable actions in this regards.
