In a significant development for Sri Lanka’s plantation workers, the minimum daily wage has been raised to Rs. 1,700. President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced this increase during a May Day rally held in Kotagala by the Ceylon Workers Congress.
The announcement came through a gazette extraordinary, issued under the powers conferred on the Commissioner General of Labour by an order made by the Minister of Labour under section 33(1) (a) of the Wages Boards Ordinance (Chapter 136).
This increase marks a crucial step towards improving the livelihoods of plantation workers engaged in the Tea Growing and Manufacturing Trade. President Wickremesinghe’s announcement underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the welfare of the working class, particularly in crucial sectors like tea production.
