China responds to recent arrests of Chinese nationals in Sri Lanka for ‘online scams’

The Chinese Embassy in Colombo has expressed support for Sri Lankan law enforcement in cracking down on suspected online fraud cases involving Chinese nationals. The Chinese Embassy emphasized that these cases not only threaten property and damage China’s image but also affect the traditional friendship between the two countries. The Chinese government has been actively working to combat telecom and online fraud, with the number of cases solved in China in 2021 being five times higher than five years ago. The Chinese Embassy also highlighted that due to Sri Lanka’s advantages in telecommunications infrastructure, geographical location, and friendly relations with China, some electronic fraud criminal gangs have moved to Sri Lanka and continue engaging in fraud activities targeting Chinese citizens at home and abroad. The Chinese government is actively promoting China-Sri Lanka anti-online fraud law enforcement cooperation and is ready to further strengthen law enforcement cooperation with Sri Lanka. The Chinese Embassy also hopes to gain understanding and support from the Sri Lankan government and people, especially the police and media.
