At least 115 children died in road accidents in the months that have elapsed this year, the Traffic Division of Sri Lanka Police says.
Addressing a media briefing in Colombo, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manoj Ranagala, who is in charge of the Traffic Police Division, said these deaths were reported between January 01 to October 15.
He attributed these child deaths to the careless driving of motorists.
Commenting further in this regard, SSP Ranagala said Sri Lanka has recorded a total of 1,790 motor accidents during the aforementioned period. The annual death toll from road accidents in 2022 stood at 2,539.
SSP Ranagala said majority of the deceased were youths, noting that many accidents involved motorcycles.
He also urged parents to make sure that children wear safety helmets while travelling with them on motorcycles.
