Ambassador Chandana Weerasena presented his Letters of Credence to Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, as the new Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg with concurrent accreditation from Belgium.
The presentation of credentials, held on 13 June, was followed by a private audience for the new ambassador with the Grand Duke at the latter’s invitation.
Ambassador Weerasena conveyed greetings and best wishes from President Ranil Wickremesinghe to the Grand Duke. The Ambassador thanked Luxembourg for their role in the capacity of a member of the European Union with which Sri Lanka has many engagements. He also emphasised his desire to explore deeper political and economic cooperation with Luxembourg, which is one of the richest countries in the world by GDP per capita.
Grand Duke Henri reciprocated the warm greetings to the President and the People of Sri Lanka. During the audience, a number of topics were discussed which were of bilateral importance. The Grand Duke invited the new Ambassador to explore more economic relations with Luxembourg, especially with the private sector.
During the visit to Luxembourg, Ambassador Weerasena met with a number of other officials including the Secretary Foreign Affairs, Director for Political Affairs, senior officials of the Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Multinationalism & UN Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vice President in Charge of South Asia and South East Asia of the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the newly appointed Honorary Consul for Sri Lanka in Luxembourg.
Ambassador Weerasena is currently serving as the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Belgium and the European Union. Prior to this appointment, he has held a number of other diplomatic ranks of Sri Lanka missions in Tokyo, Canberra, and New Delhi. Ambassador Weerasena holds two Masters Degrees from the Australian National University in Canberra in ‘Diplomacy’ and ‘Asia Pacific Studies’. He graduated from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka with a ‘Bachelor of Commerce’ degree and is a past student of Ampitiya Berrewaerts College, Kandy.
